Are you a grower who wants to apply a vegan approach and minimize your impact on the environment? If so, seaweed and kelp fertilizers are the best options for you. They are ideal for both hydroponic and soil gardens and are super effective organic fertilizers.
What are the benefits of seaweed fertilizers?
Seaweed and kelp fertilizers are known for providing plants with a good dose of potassium and nitrogen. They offer diverse micronutrient and solid macronutrient profiles. As a result, these fertilizers encourage healthy vegetative growth with more and better leaves. This leads to higher flower production in the long run. Kelp meals have the added advantage of containing phosphorus, which is good for enabling the plant to develop a healthy, robust root system.
Does seaweed feed contain high quantities of nitrogen?
Yes, seaweed feed does contain high quantities of nitrogen. However, this does not mean that you have to worry about them being a nitrogen-dominant nutrient. The majority of the kelp and seaweed fertilizers on the market offer a fair balance of potassium and nitrogen, with minimal levels of, or absence of, phosphorus. This is the reason why these organic fertilizers are fantastic for vegetative growth.
Is it okay if you put seaweed straight into your garden?
Some growers are fortunate enough to live near the coast. Since they have access to an unlimited supply of seaweed straight from the ocean, they often enquire if they can put it straight into their gardens.
Well, theoretically, you can. However, we would say it’s not the best thing to do. The reason is that when you buy a seaweed or kelp fertilizer, you have a clear picture of precisely what is in it. Alternatively, picking some seaweed or kelp from the sea and using it directly is risky because you don’t know if it is contaminated – or in fact, even if it is actually seaweed or kelp or not!
So, the best thing to do is purchase a seaweed or kelp fertilizer and use it without any worry. Also, when you buy liquid seaweed fertilizer, you will find that dosing is significantly easier. Just sprinkling clumps of seaweed or kelp into your soil and waiting for it to turn into compost isn’t the best of strategies.
Here’s an expert tip. When you shop for the best seaweed fertilizer, look for one that is OMRI Listed. This means that it has been tested under the most stringent protocol and is as organic as it can be.
