Are Fluorescent Bulbs Good for Plants?

The Fluorescent Grow lights are one great way to offer plants some high-quality light at a low cost. Compact Fluorescent (CFL) & T5 Fluorescents are hung close to plants without bleaching or burning, which is why most growers go out to grow lights for propagation. When you decide on the right fluorescent bulb for yourself, the most important consideration is why you'll be using fluorescent lighting. Bulbs with a “cool blue” classification or 6,500 K are perfect for veg growth. In contrast, the bulbs rated as “warm red” or 2700 K are excellent for flowering.

What is A T5 Bulb?

T5 Bulb operates the most efficiently, so it is considered the most popular fluorescent grow light. It emits more lumens than any other fluorescent lights. The T in the T5 is for TUBULAR, indicating the structure of the bulb itself, and the number 5 is for 5/8'' thick. A T5 has a lifespan of around 10,000 hours, but the number keeps increasing as technology advances.

Another addition to fluorescent lighting is the T5 LED bulb, which allows fluorescent lighting fixtures to house the LED technology.

Compact fluorescent lights are another yet prevalent fluorescent light. They are loved for their energy efficiency also cool operating temperature. These bulbs come in flower and veg spectrums, with some that are even full spectrum.

Are T8 Bulbs Good for Growing?

The T8 fluorescent lights are incredibly similar to the T5 but are 1'' thick. The fluorescent grow lights lose efficiency when they grow in size. While the T5 is the most resourceful, the T8 is about 8% less efficient but has a longer lifespan than the T5. And similarly, a T12 bulb operates even less efficiently.
